Release of prisoner Kardashian posing ‘significant threat’ to public ‘imminent’

Convicted Prisoner “Barbie Kardashian” to Be Released from Limerick Prison

A transgender prisoner known as Barbie Kardashian, described during her trial as posing a “significant threat” to the public, is set to be released from Limerick Prison.

Kardashian, in her mid-20s, was serving a five-and-a-half-year sentence for making threats to torture, rape, and murder. She has served two years and six months of the term, with the final year suspended. Upon release, she has agreed to a two-year post-supervision release order imposed by Limerick Circuit Court. The Irish Prison Service declined to comment on individual cases.

Born Gabriel Alejandro Gentile, Kardashian legally changed her name and now identifies as female. She has not undergone gender-affirming surgery but holds a certificate from the Department of Social Protection recognizing her as female. Diagnosed with multiple personality disorders, she was placed in state care at age 12 following a High Court Special Care Order, after alleging past sexual and physical abuse.

At her four-day trial in March 2023, Gardaí expressed “grave concerns” about her motivation to act on the threats. Detective Garda Niall Fitzgerald noted that Kardashian continued to pose a serious risk both to the specific individual she threatened — her mother — and to the wider public.

The threats were made while Kardashian was in Coovagh House, a residential care facility in Limerick for high-risk youth. During sentencing, the court heard that Kardashian detailed plans to assault, torture, and kill her mother, even providing handwritten notes outlining her intentions, which she attributed to childhood trauma.

Judge Tom O’Donnell, now retired, described the case as “one of the most complex” in his career. He highlighted Kardashian’s lack of remorse, narcissistic tendencies, and previous violent convictions — including sexual assault at age 13. Five psychiatric assessments concluded that Kardashian posed a real danger of carrying out her violent fantasies.

Under the terms of her release, Kardashian must reside at an address approved by Gardaí and the probation service, report any change of address, and provide details of new personal relationships. Any attempts to contact her parents could activate the suspended portion of her sentence under a Section 99 order.

Judge O’Donnell acknowledged Kardashian’s complex and vulnerable background but emphasized the ongoing concerns regarding her behavior, urging state agencies to monitor the situation closely and take heed of the probation service’s warnings.
